The Artus Court is a representative monument in Gdańsk located on the Long Market characterized by its gorgeous, white facade decorated with the medals depicting heads of Polish rulers, figures of ancient leaders, and also statues of Justice, Might and Fortune. Gdańsk History Museum is located inside.
The history of the building dates back to the Middle Ages when wealthy merchants decided to follow the footsteps of historic knights and established a building for business and social meetings. The name of the court comes from the famous legend of King Artur. It's a reference to knighthood and his life.Merchants of the Artus Court left here a lot of pieces of art which today are its equipment and display. A jewel of the collection is the original 11-meter Renaissance furnace decorated with 520 tiles with depictions of European rulers, coats of arms, and other graphics. Worthy of attention is also the sculpture of Jerzy fighting a dragon from the 15th century. The current state of the Artus Court is a result of many reconstructions of the complex containing the court itself, Stary Dom Ławy (monumental tenement house) and Nowy Dom Ławy (building of the former court).Less
