St. Mary's Church

Local name: Bazylika Mariacka

St. Mary's Church in Gdańsk is one of the most recognizable churches in Poland and the third brick church in the world with the biggest volume. Built in Gothic style, the brick basilica is distinguished in the panorama of the city by the massive bell tower and narrow towers.

The interior of the church, like the exterior, was designed in Gothic style. The high ceiling, supported by octagonal pillars, is additionally decorated. The typical for Gothic architecture long and narrow windows are decorated with wonderful stained glass.

The interior consists of monumental paintings and sculptures (mainly Gothic but also Baroque and Mannerist), exceptionally valuable medieval figures and reredoses. The most impressive sculptures placed in St. Mary's Church are the Gothic figure of Beautiful Madonna and the Gothic Pietà. It also consists of parts of wall paintings from the turn of the 16th century.
