This most famous fountain in Gdansk is one of the symbols of the city. The sculpture, referring to ancient works, weighs up to 650 kg and is made of bronze. The sculptor and architect Abraham van der Blocke and the statue cast bell founder Gerdt Benning contributed to its creation. The architectural form of the fountain is a reference to Flemish mannerism.
The fountain was erected in 1615 on the initiative of the then mayor of the city - Bartłomiej Schachmann. During World War II it was damaged. Then, to protect it from complete destruction, the fountain was demolished and hidden. After the war, it was restored and exposed again.Less
