The huge statue rising above Westerplatte in Gdansk is the Monument to Coast Defenders. It was built in honor of the soldiers who fought at Westerplatte at the beginning of World War II. The statue is visible from afar, and its image resembles the dedication of Westerplatte defenders.
Set on the mound, the Monument to Coast Defenders consists of 236 granite blocks. Its total height is 25 m. The monument is decorated with symbolic bas-reliefs and inscriptions. According to the authors - Adam Haupt, Franciszek Duszeńko and Henryk Kitowski - the monument is supposed to resemble a chipped dagger dug into the ground. Right next to the monument there are seven candles, referring to the seven days of Westerplatte defense.
