Grodzisko Fort and the Gradowa Hill

Local name: Fort Grodzisko i Góra Gradowa

Grodzisko Fort and the Gradowa Hill situated above are very important places related to the history of Gdańsk. Grodzisko Fort is a remain of the 16th-century fortification while the neighboring hill is a wonderful viewpoint.

In the past, Grodzisko Fort and the Gradowa Hill were used for observation of the city and that function remained to this day. Grodzisko Fort, as a well-developed fortification, was to defend the west part of the city. It proved itself as a fort more than once - it provided protection of inhabitants from the Sweden raid and hostile armies fighting in Northern Wars.

The current state of Grodzisko Fort is a result of the rebuilt from the 19th century. Originally, the fortification was to resemble old-Italian forts.

Grodzisko Fort and the Gradowa Hill constitute a monumental complex. The area consists of Millenium Cross, ground fortifications, the building of the former military school, buildings of the former hospital, the former armory, and Napoleonic Redoubt.
