A characteristic statue growing on Solidarity Square in Gdansk is the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers 1970. Three crosses with anchors are to commemorate the victims of the December Revolt in 1970, i.e. the protest of workers, bloodily suppressed by the militia and the army. In Gdansk there are many places associated with the modern history of the city and the country. The Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers is one of them.
This monument stood in the chosen place for a reason - because the first combatants were killed nearby. The crosses forming the monument measure up to 42 m. They are not perfectly smooth - the cracks in them have symbolic significance. At the bottom of the monument there are reliefs depicting the life of shipyard workers. The monument consists of three crosses, because the revolt began with the murder of three shipyard workers. The anchors in the upper part are a sign of hope.
