The large double doors to one of the most beautiful streets in Gdańsk - the Long Lane - are called the Golden Gate. The gate was built at the beginning of the 17th century and to this day impresses with a wonderful construction and rich decoration.
The Golden Gate is a work of one of the most prominent Gdańsk's architects - Abraham van den Blocke. The artists spent most of his life realizing projects in the style of Dutch Mannerism which is characterized by subtlety and elegant decorations. The gate at the Long Lane has three passages with four impressive windows above. The facade of the gate is topped with eight attics - each one of them is decorated with a sculpture of symbolic meaning. The statues of Peace, Freedom, Fortune, and Fame can be seen on the west side. The east side, on the other hand, has Agreement, Justice, Piety, and Prudence. The original sculptures were destroyed. The present works admired by visitors are faithful re-creations.Less
