Westerplatte Peninsula in Gdańsk is one of the most characteristic places related to World War II in Poland. Located on the coast mouth of the Dead Vistula, the peninsula played an important role during the turbulent times of the war and is one of the symbols of the start of the war.
Westerplatte consists of numerous monuments which are relicts of World War II: ferry slip, guard-houses, barracks, the Kashubian Squadron of Border Guard, viewpoint, a small cemetery of fallen in the war, and also two monuments. In September 1939, when the German siege started, the Military Transit Storage, which defense officially started Wolrd War II, functioned on Westerplatte.
