Main Town Hall
The beautiful Gothic and Renaissance building of Main Town Hall in Gdańsk is located on the Long Market. It's occupied by the branch of Gdańsk History Museum dedicated to the history of the city and also silver and porcelain.
The building of Main Town Hall with the clock tower probably comes from the 13th century, however, its recorded history starts in 1308 when it was destroyed by the Teutonic Order, and in the period between 1379-1382 when it was rebuilt. A jewel of its decor is carillon - a group of 37 bells. Carillon is a faithful re-creation of the first group from the 17th century. The tower of Main Town Hall is topped with the tented roof decorated with the gilded statue of Sigismund II Augustus. The museum's interior consists of mysteriously named halls: Great Christopher, Weta Hall, and Council Great Hall. They impress with beautiful wall frescos, paintings, furniture, and architecture from the distant past. It also presents detailed reconstructions of old apartments and shops, and also the street with stones from the Free City of Danzig.Less
