Great Armory - "Zbrojownia Sztuki" Art Gallery

Great Armory - "Zbrojownia Sztuki" Art Gallery is one of the most beautiful and impressive monuments in Gdańsk. The object is occupied by the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and cannot be explored, however, the building itself impresses with its size, the style of Dutch Mannerism, and richly decorated facade.

The building served as a city arsenal for almost a hundred years. In 1973, it was taken over by the army and was no longer opened to the public. The stonework is a work by Abraham van den Blocke, prominent architect and author of, among others, famous Neptune's Fountain, and the facade of the Artus Court.

The facade on the side of Piwna Street is decorated with the statue of Minerva and few other military-themed sculptures. Coat of arms of Gdańsk and figures of lions are situated above the portals. The facade on the side of Coal Market consists of statues of warriors. It is also worth to see the small well which was used for getting weapons from the underground.
