Museum of the First Piasts
Local name: Muzeum Pierwszych Piastów
The Museum of the First Piasts is one of the largest museums located in the open air in Poland. It consists of three exhibitions: archeological, natural and ethnographic. The most important part of the facility is the remains of the first Piasts' stronghold. It is most likely here that Mieszko I was baptized. In addition, you can see the reconstructed oval village of Greater Poland.
The medieval stronghold was built in the second half of the tenth century. Visitors can see the remains of the palace, chapel and church, which were surrounded by a rampart. Some ruins reach up to three meters in height. In addition, the underwater part of the two bridges of the Poznań-Gniezno route is located here.
The ethnographic exhibitions are presented in the open-air museum. Among others, rural farms from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were reconstructed here. Each includes a wooden cottage, barn, chicken coop and pigsty. All buildings have been equipped so that you can get to know the living conditions of the rural population better. Restoring the appearance of the village of ovals, the centrally located church was also remembered.
