Ostrów Lednicki, ruins from the 10th century

Local name: Ostrów Lednicki, ruiny z X wieku

Ostrów Lednicki is an island on the Lednica Lake, one of the most important places for the history of Poland. Historians indicate that it could have been a place of baptism of Mieszko I. There are remains of the seat of the rulers of the Polans' state, including the ducal palace connected with the pre-Romanesque chapel, the borough, and the church situated within it.

At the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries Ostrów Lednicki was the centre of the Polan's State. There was a castle and the seat of the ruler. During the archaeological excavation were found the remains of a palas, a ducal palace, connected with a sacral object. These are the oldest traces of the pre-Romanesque church preserved in Poland. In its lowest part, there was a room for the baptismal ritual - a baptistery. This prompts historians to point Ostrów Lednicki as the likely place of the baptism of Mieszko I.

Tourists arriving to Ostrów Lednicki must go by ferry. On the island visitors can see the foundations of the church, houses standing within the castle, its fortifications, and the cemetery on which the mysterious "grave of the giantess" was found. The most important monuments are the remains of the ducal palas with the baptistery and the pre-Romanesque chapel, covered for the protection with the roof. A visit to Ostrów Lednicki is an interesting journey into the history of Poland.
