Abbey Church in Czerwińsk nad Wisłą

Local name: Sanktuarium w Czerwińsku

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Consolation in Czerwińsk on the Vistula, is also called the Basilica of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The stone monastery was built in the first half of the 12th century as a two-towered church, which proved to be of great significance to the temple. The frescoes of the thirteenth century, preserved in its interior, are the largest collection of Romanesque paintings in Poland.

The original appearance of the basilica was not saved due to its turbulent history and the fire of the early 14th century, which only spared the walls. In addition, over the centuries, with the growing importance of the church, the shrine was rebuilt, resulting in Gothic and Baroque features.

In 1612, a painting of Our Lady, painted by Lukasz Łowicz, was painted in the church as a miraculous image of Our Lady of the Snow from the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. To the red picture, which in 1648 was declared a miracle, pilgrimaged the kings with a request for grace and help. One of them was King Wladyslaw IV, who left the vote "Near death - he got health".

As a result of conservatory work from the early 20th century, the façade and church towers were reconstructed, and Romanesque frescoes were also discovered. The richly decorated Romanesque main portal from the first half of the 12th century, which was largely restored, is a valuable monument. In the basilica you can also admire the 15th century Gothic frescoes.

Since 1923, the Salesians have been taking care of the sanctuary.
