Silesian Planetarium

Local name: Planetarium Śląskie

The facility is the largest and oldest planetarium and astronomical observatory in Poland. Planetarium Śląskie (Silesian Planetarium) of Nicolaus Copernicus was founded in the 1950s and since then it has been constantly teaching its visitors issues related to the cosmos. Each element of the planetarium in Chorzów has been planned in such way to give visitors as much knowledge as possible about what they see in the sky.

In the Silesian Planetarium there can be 400 people in the auditorium at the same time. Visitors sitting under the dome can see above their heads the imitation of the sky, which during the shows glisters with colors and lights, showing the planets and other celestial bodies. Additionally, through the telescopes installed in the planetarium, visitors can observe the Sun, the Moon, various planets, and constellations in up to 750-fold magnification.

As the Silesian Planetarium of Nicolaus Copernicus in Chorzów, was established to commemorate the outstanding astronomer, near the dome of the planetarium there is a Copernicus monument sculpted in a stone.
