Silesian Park in Chorzów, called 'green lungs of Upper Silesia', covers the are of 620ha what makes it one of the biggest city parks in Europe. It was established in the first half of the 20th century in the former industrial areas and vegetation barrens. The area consists of Silesian Zoological Garden, Silesian Stadium, the Silesian Planetarium, and Silesian Amusement Park.
The former industrial land was not suitable for a park, however, thanks to the application of fertile soil it was possible to plant various tree and shrub species, which number amounts today to around 3,5 million. This open space reserve is currently inhabited by many bird and mammal species like boars, deer or foxes.Apart from the previously mentioned Chorzów's cultural and scientific institutions, the area of the Silesian Park also contains other popular institutions such as Silesian Sculpture Gallery, Aquapark "Fala", Ropeway "Elka" or Stadium GSK Katowice.Less
