Local name: Twierdza Przemyśl - Fort XIII "San Rideau"
San Rideau, or the shield of the San River, is a powerful three-storey fortified armored fort of the outer ring of the Przemyśl Fortress. Combining the functions of near and far defense, the facility was built in 1892-1896 according to the design of General Moritz von Brunner. It is located at the northern section of the black fortress route and the green cycling route. Tourists can see there, among others well-preserved shooting position - so-called Carnot wall, a network of underground corridors with traps, and remains of barracks. Despite significant damage, San Rideau still commands respect by its magnitude and scale, recalling the splendour of one of the largest European fortresses.
There is a mysterious story connected with San Rideau, about Russian prisoners buried alive while blowing up a fort on the day of capitulation of the fortress. When after the World War I the building was intended for demolition, during the work in one of the buried rooms, an extremly exhausted, ghostlike man was supposedly found. Thanks to the food and water supplies, he managed to survive in the ruins of the fort for several years, but he lost his mind. He was transported to the hospital, and soon he died. The case has never been fully clarified. On its basis, the "Fort 13", film of Grzegorz Królikiewicz was made.Less
