Augustów Canal Museum

Local name: Muzeum Kanału Augustowskiego

The institute is located in the 19th century, monumental building of the Prądzyński manor, near the unique waterway. The name of the building, where the museum is placed, comes from a surname of the main designer of the canal. The Museum of History of Augustów Canal is one of the branches of the Museum of Augustów Land.

The Augusów Canal is unique on a national scale. It's a great engineering achievement of the 19th century and one of the biggest tourist attractions in the region. The waterway connects the drainage basins of the Vistula and the Neman. It consists of 18 locks and has 102km in length.

The museum displays collections related to the history of construction and usage of the canal, and also expositions concerning Ignacy Prądziński himself. One of the most valuable display units is the manuscript with the general's notes and the document from 1792 signed by King Stanisław August Poniatowski, which confirms the laws of the inhabitants of Augustów suburbs.
