The capital of Macedonia, Skopje is a city that is constantly changing its face. From a typical Balkan center with witchcraft and buildings remembering the time of the Turkish occupation, it becomes a metropolis emphasizing the relationship with antiquity.

Skopia already existed in the Illyrian times as a settlement of Scup or Skup. In the following centuries it passed successively under the rule of Greece, Rome, Byzantium, and Serbs and finally for almost 500 years it hit the borders of the Turkish Imprium. It was this period that left its biggest mark on today's appearance of the city.

Above the buildings there is a kale fortress built by the Turks on the hill. Renovated at the beginning of the 21st century, it is now a place where outdoor events take place and its walls offer a beautiful view of the city. At the foot of the fortress is the former Turkish quarter with several mosques and the former Czarshiya.

Until recently, the bazaar was an ornament and one of the main attractions of the capital, but during the reconstruction part of this district was demolished, and the remaining street stalls were replaced by boutiques. However, it is still crowded here, and in eateries and bars you can eat traditional Balkan dishes or drink coffee brewed in saucepans.

Districts on the banks of the Wardar underwent major changes. The banks connected by a stone Turkish bridge are today built up with monumental, neoclassical buildings, which house, among others, National Museum, Library or various central offices.

Skopje is a good starting point to visit the picturesque Matka Canyon, located a few kilometers from the city. Today, the canyon is partly filled with artificial reservoir waters, and there are plenty of restaurants and bars around, as well as a marina from which you can take a boat trip on the lake.
