Krushevo is the highest city in North Macedonia, a winter sports center, and at the same time an important point on the historical map of the country. It was here that the center of the uprising of Ilinden and the Republic of Krushev, which existed only 10 days, was located, which was one of the foundations of the modern state.
The city was founded in the 15th century, but its development accelerated in the 18th century, when merchants and craftsmen from Joanina, fleeing persecution, came here. Thanks to him, one of the most thriving artistic, craft and trade centers was established here, and at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the city experienced its golden age. The churches of the Holy Trinity and the Dormition of the Mother of God, which have survived to this day, come from the 19th century. St. Nicholas from the first half of the 19th century was destroyed during the Ilinden uprising in 1903, but was rebuilt in the following years.
The establishment and existence of the Kruszewska Republic are the most important pages in the history of the city. They are mainly commemorated by the Makedonium complex, within which there is the Ilinden monument, the Tose Proeski Memorial House and the National Liberation War Museum.
While visiting Kruszewo, it is also worth visiting the oldest district, called Czarszija. It is a maze of cobbled streets and traditional Balkan houses. There are a lot of shops, restaurants and bars here.
