Museum of the Care Home for Women
Local name: Museum het Vrouwenhuis Zwolle
Vrouwenhuis is a historic nursing home for older women. The building is located at Melkmarkt 23 and is currently mostly rented to students, while on the ground floor there is a small museum - opened only on special request - containing souvenirs about this special place.
At the very beginning, Vrouwenhuis was at the port and was purchased by the young lawyer Hendrik Wolfsen in 1645, who renovated and restored the building. For some time, the estate was the school of painting Wilhelm Beurs, whose students were women, including Aleida Greve, later a well-known Dutch painter. After her death, according to the artist's will, a retirement home was created for 17 women from the Dutch upper class.
In Vrouwenhis there is the historic Aleida's lounge with a collection of paintings by women from the Beurs school, as well as several works by Peter van den Velde. Since the painter's death in 1742, you can admire this time capsule intact - as per the artist's wishes.
