Castle Radboud
Local name: Kasteel Radboud
Radboud Castle is located on the eastern shore of the marina in Medemblik. This is one of the many castles in North Holland, whose construction was commissioned by Floris V. The exact date of the construction of the building is unknown, but the castle was completed before the end of 1287.
For many years, the stronghold served as a defensive function. In 1517, when pirate bands invaded the city, some of the inhabitants managed to save thanks to it. However, at the end of the 16th century, after building the city walls, the castle lost its defensive function and gradually fell into ruin. No noble family has ever wanted to live here.
In the years 1890-1897, renovation work was carried out under the direction of PJH Cuypers. Radboud Castle was then owned by the Dutch state. The National Monuments Organization has been dealing with it since 2016. It is interesting that in 1939 Rembrandt's painting "Night Watch" was hidden here.
