Castle Ammersoyen
Local name: Kasteel Ammersoyen
Located on the outskirts of the city of Ammerzoden, the castle is one of the region's most interesting tourist attractions. In the 20th century, the stronghold was taken over by a private foundation (Friends of the Castles of Gelderland), which restored its former medieval appearance. Currently, the fully restored castle is open to the public. There is a restaurant (organizing weddings and wedding receptions) and the headquarters of the archaeological museum. The exhibition consists of valuable items made of ceramics, stoneware, glass, silver, bronze and tin.
The stronghold was built in the mid-fourteenth century in the place of a former wooden fortified stronghold. Over the centuries, the castle has been besieged, destroyed and rebuilt many times. In the nineteenth century, the building was bought by the church authorities, who arranged in it the monastery of the Order of Poor Clares. Serious damage caused by Allied air raids during World War II caused the castle to turn into ruin. It wasn't until 1959 that reconstruction began, which lasted sixteen years.
