National Rescue Museum Dorus Rijkers
Local name: Nationaal Reddingmuseum Dorus Rijkers
Museum Reddingmuseum Dorus Rijkers is a museum devoted to Dutch rescue operations at sea. It is located in a former engine workshop on the grounds of historic docks. Much of the former workshop equipment is still visible in the museum. The exhibits include real lifeboats, models and equipment like life jackets. You can visit alone or with a guide. Boat trips are available.
There are also attractions for children. They can play a game in which they check if they are ready to join the rescue team. They can also feel the strength of the 10 scale wind force in a wind turbine and experience a storm at sea on a lifeboat simulator.
The Redding Museum was founded in 1982. They were named after Dorus Rijkers, the captain of the lifeboat at Den Helder, who lived at the turn of the century. Dorus and his crew saved over 500 people in total.
