St. Gertrude Church
Local name: Gertrudiskerk
Sint Gertrudiskerk, or the Church of St. Gertrudy, in the town of Bergen op Zoom is a Catholic temple that is very recognizable due to its characteristic, large tower. This building represents the Brabant Gothic style. Inside the church, noteworthy are the nineteenth-century organs, three Flemish confessionals and a stained glass window depicting Saint Gertrude.
According to legend, the church was founded by St. Gertrude of Nijvel in 654. The oldest preserved part of the temple to this day, i.e. the tower, dates from 1370. In the 15th century, the building was rebuilt and enlarged by the architect Evert Spoorwater.
In 1747 the church was partially destroyed by bombing and was rebuilt by the Protestant community. Until the mid-twentieth century, it remained in the hands of Protestants, and now serves again as a Catholic temple. The church Gertruda is often used in the organization of various types of concerts because it has excellent acoustic conditions.
