Vuurtoreneiland

Local name: Vuurtoreneiland

The small island is located on Lake Ijmeer. There is a lighthouse, dating back to the beginning of the 18th century, and a military fort, abandoned since 1930. The island was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It can be reached by ferry that runs daily from the port of Amsterdam.

The main attraction on the island is now the restaurant, housed in a modern glass building, from which you can see the entire area. It serves mainly traditional dishes. In winter, the glazed pavilion is closed, and guests are welcomed in an underground bunker, where they can warm themselves by the fire and wrap a warm blanket with their meal.

The second attraction is a cast-iron lighthouse, dating from 1893. It replaced the previous lighthouse, built of stone already around 1700. The present lighthouse is the only one near Amsterdam. It is in operation to this day, but was closed between 2003 and 2005 after the previous lighthouse keeper retired.
