Maritime Museum

Local name: Het Scheepvaartmuseum

Museum dedicated to the history of maritime Netherlands. The collection includes about 400,000 exhibits, including maps and globes, images, ship models, weapons, navigation equipment. The museum library has titles devoted to shipbuilding, marine geography, as well as ship diaries. This is one of the most numerous collections in the country.

The museum was founded in 1916. The building, which has been based since 1972, was built in the 17th century and served as a weapon storage. In front of the museum is a replica of the 18th-century Amsterdam ship that was sailing for the Dutch East India Company. The ship sank during a storm in 1749. His wreck was not discovered until 1969.

The museum offers many interactive solutions. Thanks to VR glasses you can move into virtual reality and observe life in the 17th-century port. The youngest can, however, take part in the "Life on a Ship" game.
