Resistance Museum
Local name: Verzetsmuseum
Historical museum in the Plantage district dedicated to World War II. From May 14, 1940 to May 5, 1945, the Netherlands was occupied by Germany, and this is where the permanent exhibition of the museum tells. It introduces the everyday life of ordinary people at this cruel time, tells about their struggle and resistance.
The building, in which the Verzetsmuseum has been located since 1999, dates from 1876. It was built by the Jewish singers' association and served as a synagogue and Jewish cultural center for several decades. The building has the star of David and the inscription Plancius (Petrus Plancius was a Renaissance clergyman and geographer from Amsterdam). The association retained his name on the facade to express respect for the city's traditions.
