The theater presents operas, ballet plays, recitals and musicals.
The construction of the building began in 1980. The design and construction of a new auditorium was entrusted to the Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauerg. The theater was opened on September 23, 1986 and has since been the seat of the De Nationale Oper, formerly the De Nederlandse Opera and Het Nationale Ballet. In 2013, as a result of the merger of the Dutch Opera and National Ballet, a new institution was established, operating since 2014 under the name National Opera and Ballet Theater.
