Mgarr ix-Xini Tower
Local name: Torri Mgarr ix-Xini
The Mgarr ix-Xini Tower is the largest coastal watchtower on the island of Gozo. It was built in the second half. 17th century. The building is one of the fourteen coastal observation towers built around the shores of Malta and Gozo during the reign of Grand Master Martin de Redin. A characteristic feature of the historic stone tower are the entrance stairs and the drawbridge. Entrance to all other watchtowers was via a retractable ladder.
The author of the design was the French architect Mederico Blondel, and the construction cost was equivalent to today's 166 euros. The building was within sight of the Comino tower and the tower of St. Cecilia. The watchtower in Mgarr ix-Xini bay operated until 1661 and was originally manned by the castellan and bombardier.
