Porta San Giovanni is a historic gate located in the ancient Aurealiana Wall in Rome. It comes from the 16th century. It is the work of Giacomo del Duki, a student of Michelangelo. Stands out against the background of the fortifications with a decorative arch, reliefs and an inscription commemorating the date of construction.
The gate was founded on the initiative of Pope Gregory XIII. It was about improving traffic in the city. The wall in which the gate was placed was built of concrete and bricks. Between the battlements at its top was a long, well-protected corridor.
The defensive city walls were erected in the years 272-282, they surrounded the ancient city, in order to protect against invaders. Created at the behest of Emperor Lucius Domicjusz Aureliana. Unfortunately, despite the solid fortifications in the fifth century, Rome was conquered by Visigoths and Vandals.
