Church of St. Sylvester Quirinale

Local name: Chiesa di San Silvestro al Quirinale

The Church of San Silvestro on the Quirinal Hill in Rome dates back to the 9th century. Visitors can admire the gilded coffered ceiling decorated with scenes from the Bible by Flaminio Boulanger and paintings by Renaissance artists: Marcello Venusti and Maturino da Firenze.

The temple also houses the tomb of Cardinal Federico Cornaro, which is the work of the famous Italian sculptor Giovan Battista Della Porta. Adjacent to the church is the Bandini Chapel, where you can see unique stucco sculptures made by Alessandro Algardi - "Santa Maria Maddalena" and "San Giovanni" (works from the 1720s).

In the 16th century, on the initiative of Pope Julius II, the temple was given to the Dominican Order, then it was taken over by the Theatines. The church was expanded at that time. After the creation of the United Kingdom of Italy, it was temporarily converted into barracks.
