Santa Maria in Traspontina is a church from the 16th century. It was built on a Latin cross plan. The main architect of the building was Bolognese Ottaviano Mascherino. Its interior is decorated with frescoes depicting the saints of the Carmelite Order, by Domenico Cerrini from the 17th century.
The main four-poster altar is a design by Carlo Fontana. He is famous among the faithful for the miraculous image of Mary from the 13th century. An interesting object is located next to the cross fragment, which according to legend, suffered the martyrdom of Peter the Apostle.
There are four chapels on both sides of the nave. One of them is dedicated to Saint. Barbara, you can admire the 16th-century altar of Cavalier d'Arpino. Walls of the chapel of St. Albert is decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from his life. The author of the paintings was Antonio Circignani (Pomarancio), he created them in the second half of the 16th century.
