Acqua Paola Fountain

Local name: Fontana dell'Acqua Paola

Fontana dell'Acqua Paola is located on the Roman Janikulum Hill near the church of San Pietro in Montorio. It is one of the larger city fountains, the first of its size, which was created on the right side of the Tiber. For its construction, marble was used from the ruins of the Roman Forum, as well as fragments from the Temple of Minerva. Apparently, 4 out of 6 pink columns adorning the monument were also obtained from the former basilica of St. Peter. Dell'Acqua Paola was reportedly the model for the famous Trevi Fountain.

This monumental construction was created in 1612. It closed the Acqua Traiana aqueduct restored at the will of Pope Paul V and named after him Acqua Paola. At the top of the fountain are eagle and dragon, animals that are symbols of the Borghese family, from which the pope came. The terrace in front of the fountain is one of the many viewpoints - it offers a perfect panorama of the city.
