Monte Sant'Angelo is a town known for one of the most important sanctuaries in the world dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. Situated on a hill and surrounded by forests, it looks beautiful at any time of the year.
The beginnings of the sanctuary of St. Michael the Archangel dates back to the 6th century. His heart is the grotto where the apparitions were to take place at that time. In the Middle Ages, a monastery complex was built around the grotto, and in the vicinity the Castle of Monte Sant'Angelo. The sanctuary has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries and one of the most important holy places in Italy.
Monte Sant'Angelo's attractions also include its location. The buildings below the sanctuary climb the slopes of the hill. It is surrounded by the forests of the Foresta Umbra under the protection of the Gargano National Park. There are more than a dozen hiking trails that lead through a variety of landscapes and plant communities, from Mediterranean thickets to beech forests.
