The historic Roman Catholic basilica is located in the place where, according to the Holy Scriptures, St. Peter was to go ashore on his way from Antioch to Rome. Originally, there were several early Catholic churches here, which were built in the 4th and 7th centuries. The present basilica was built at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries in the Romanesque style.
