Naviglio Grande is the largest and best known of the five Milan canals. It is also the oldest of them, its construction began in the 13th century. He connected the Ticino river with Milan. Although most of the canals were drained in 1930, water still flows through Naviglio Grande. Along the canal there are numerous restaurants and bars, cyclical flea markets, flower exhibitions, concerts and other interesting events are also nearby.
The Naviglio Grande canal was very important for the city's development. He served drainage, i.e. irrigated the fields and ensured the smooth functioning of the mills. He played a significant role in the history of Milan. It was with him that the marble and other materials needed for the construction of the beautiful Cathedral of the Birth of St. Mary.
After the city's power was taken over by the dynasty of the Sforza princes, and the city grew significantly, a project was built to build further channels - Naviglio Martesana and Naviglio Bereguardo. Leonardo da Vinci himself supervised the work.
