The monumental cemetery is next to the Main Cemetery one of the two largest necropolises of Milan. He is known for numerous artistically made monuments and tombs. The main entrance leads through a massive building made of marble and stone, in which some of the city's most eminent citizens were buried, e.g. Alessandro Manzoni. There is also a permanent exhibition consisting of maps, prints and photographs illustrating the development of the necropolis over the years.
The official opening took place in 1866. In the cemetery you can find many not only classical and contemporary Italian sculptures, but also elaborate obelisks or Greek temples. There are many graves designed for people from industrial dynasties by such artists as Dante Parini, Adlfo Wildt or Mario Palanti.
The necropolis was designed by the architect Carlo Maciachini. According to the original assumptions, it was to connect smaller cemeteries scattered throughout the city. There is a place at the cemetery for burials of people who did not profess Catholicism or Judaism.
