The golden Mary statue is 7 meters high and guards the city and the port of Messina. Mary became the patron saint of the city after, according to legend, she sent a letter to the citizens of Messina. She ended the letter with the words that when translated read "We bless you and your city", which in 1900 were placed on the statue's pedestal.
