The cathedral in Messina was built in the 13th century, but only the lower wall fragments have survived to this day. The rest is a reconstruction made after the destruction of World War II. It is a three-nave basilica with a dozen or so side altars. A large part of the sculptures decorating the interior is original and comes from the 15th-16th centuries.
