The cathedral was built on the site of the 9th century church in the years 1395-1401. In later centuries, it was rebuilt several times after fires that destroyed its interior. It received its present shape in the 17th century. A late Renaissance facade was made of Carrara marble, and the interior was decorated with illusionist polychromes. The cathedral houses the tombs of several members of the Gonzaga family, as well as the tomb of St. Anselm of Lucca, patron saint of the city.
