Casale Monferrato is a historic city that dates back to ancient times. There is a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral considered to be one of the most important monuments of this type in Piedmont.
The city was founded by the Romans, and on the site of the then Roman Forum is the most important square today, Piazza Mazzini. Its characteristic element is the 19th-century Statue of Carl Alberto Rega dressed in a Roman costume of a senator.
After a period of decline caused by barbarian invasions, it was reborn in the 10th century as an important center of trade and crafts during the migration of peoples. The cult of St. Evasio, in whose honor the cathedral was erected. It is now the most important monument and attraction of Casale Monferrato. The interior of the five-aisle church is decorated with numerous works of art by artists from Lombardy and Piedmont.
Within the Old Town of Casale Monferrato, you can also see Renaissance and Baroque palaces, as well as a 16th-century synagogue with a richly decorated interior with a Jewish Museum.
