The historic palace was built around 1200 as the seat of various officers of the commune. It stands in Piazza Maggiore, right in the city center. In 1453, Aristotle Fioravanti rebuilt the original Gothic facade in the Renaissance style, while in 1525 the palace was decorated with terracotta statues of the patrons of Bologna.
