The museum is devoted to geology and was inaugurated in 1881. It is connected to the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the University of Bologna. It was founded thanks to the efforts of Giovanni Capellini and gathers about 3,000 works collected by the scholar in 1860-1911. The museum also has collections gathered by other scientists, including several dinosaur skeletons.
