One of the leading modern National Galleries, it was opened in 1885. The collection was initiated in 1762 when Monsignor Francesco Zambeccari transferred paintings from the 16th century to Accademia Clementina. They form the basis of the current collection. The first catalog of 274 images dates from 1827.
