The church was built on the ruins of the Roman arena, where according to legend during the time of Emperor Diocletian, tortured Christian martyrs. The temple has valuable works of art, such as the Renaissance chapel of St. Maria degli Angeli by Gasparo Nadi and the ancient crypt.
