Tomb of the Virgin Mary

Local name: Tomb of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is a Christian temple that is located in Jerusalem, between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. According to beliefs, the grave of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, was in the church. Apocrypha Ransitus Mariae reports that from this place Mary was taken with her body to heaven. Already in the 4th century, the first chapel dedicated to the Mother of Jesus was built here, and the present underground church of the Holy Sepulcher remains under the protection of Greek and Armenian monks.

The first chapel that was built here was demolished in 614. The building rebuilt in the second half of the 7th century survived until 1009, when it was destroyed by the Fatimids. In the years 1112-1130 another construction was built over the Tomb of the Mother of God, to which the monastery adjoined. This temple was also demolished in 1187 by the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty, who saved the underground crypt due to his respect for the Mother of Jesus.

The church covering the tomb was dug in an underground rock cave, which can be reached via a wide staircase. On the right side of the staircase is the chapel of the parents of Maria, Joachim and Anna, while on the left you can find the chapel of St. Joseph. On the eastern side of the temple is the chapel of Mary's grave with a stone bench on which her body lay.
