Rockefeller Museum of Archeology

Local name: מוזיאון רוקפלר לארכאולוגיה

The Rockefeller Archaeological Museum, also known as the Palestinian Archaeological Museum, is located in East Jerusalem and collects historical artifacts from the Palestinian Mandate that were excavated in 1920-1930. The museum was opened to visitors in 1938. It is believed that the gallery exhibits one of the richest archaeological collections in all of Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Archaeological Museum was created on the initiative of Jakub Hebry Breasted, who was the founder and member of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago. In 1925 he visited Palestine and expressed amazement that there is no archaeological museum in Jerusalem. He managed to raise funds to establish a proper gallery in the city. The main founder of the Archaeological Museum was the American philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, whose name the object took its name from.

The most valuable acquisitions of the museum include wooden panels from the Al-Aqsa mosque and marble lintels from the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. The gallery mainly collects artifacts found in Jerusalem, Megiddo, Ashkelon, Lakish, Samaria and Jericho.
