Herod's Gate is one of the eight gates of Jerusalem. It leads to the Muslim Quarter within the old city. It is a stone building on a rectangular plan with an arched, semi-circular passage. From the outside, it is decorated with stone floral motifs.
The name of the gate comes from the governor of Galilee, Herod the Great. He held his office in the first century BC During his reign, the Second Jerusalem Temple was expanded and the defensive walls and gates were strengthened. According to earlier speculations of historians, Herod's palace was to be located near the Gate. However, this has not yet been confirmed. Arabs call it the Flower Gate because of the decoration. In its vicinity you can find many street stalls.
