Borgarnes is one of the largest and most important resorts in West Iceland. It is located on the famous road No. 1 along the coast. It can boast a very long history and some interesting museums. There are beautiful waterfalls in the area.

The name of the town appears for the first time in the Saga of Egil, one of the most important works of medieval Icelandic literature. So it is known that this settlement existed and was a significant center for the region and the country. In 1861, a Danish trading post was established here. One of the then department stores has survived to this day.

Today's Borgarnes is a large city with 2,000 permanent residents for Iceland. It is situated on the Borgarfjörður fjord and is surrounded by vast green meadows. About 35 km from the city, the Deildartunguhver thermal spring is considered the strongest and most efficient in the world. The water from it is transported through the water supply and is used to heat houses in Borgarnes. Two other natural attractions in the area are Barnafoss Waterfall and Hraunfossar Waterfall.

Borg Myrum Church stands on the outskirts of the city. The building itself is nineteenth-century, but according to the Saga of Egil, a temple stood here in the Middle Ages. Next to it you can see a sculpture of Egil mourning the son of Bodwar. People looking for information about the history and nature of the area should visit the Borgarnes Museum, which houses, among others, extensive exhibition dedicated to Icelandic birds. In turn, the traditions related to the Saga of Egil and settlement in the area are presented by the Settlement Center. An interesting object is also a small Museum of Old Cars.
