Margaret Island is a recreational area in the city center. There are tennis courts and sports fields, bike paths and treadmills, as well as a hotel and restaurants. In addition, here you can see the so-called playing fountain, Japanese garden, water tower and ruins of a medieval monastery. Part of the island has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The name of the island comes from Saint Margaret, daughter of the Hungarian king Bela IV. She spent most of her life in the Dominican monastery, which was located on the island. This monastery was built in the 13th century, and today you can see its ruins. There is also the tomb of Saint Margaret.
Margaret Island in its present shape was created in the 1950s by connecting three smaller islands. It has a length of 2.5 kilometers and a maximum width of 500 meters. The island is connected with the rest of the city by two bridges: Małgorzata and Arpad. You cannot enter the island by car, but buses come here.
